Merton Mencap: Kid’s First
Decision Making: Mental Capacity and Powers of Attorney
Thursday 22nd February 2018, 10.15am to 12.45pm
Chaucer Centre, Canterbury Road, Morden, SM4 6PX
OnThursday 22nd February 2018 Philip Warford is speaking to parents and carers at Merton Mencap’s Kids First Group about Decision Making for people with additional needs.
Kids First is a forum for parents and carers of children or young people who are aged between 0-25 years, living in the Merton area and have a disability or additional needs.
Philip will explain to parents and carers the principles around mental capacity, what you need to consider and talk about what the future holds when their child reaches 18. The fundamental principle is that no one has the right to make decisions on behalf of a person when they become an adult. The reality of this is not so clear cut.
If a person lacks the ability to make a decision then their mental capacity is questioned, Philip will explain the principles around mental capacity and what families and carers need to consider.
He will also go on to talk about Powers of Attorney, the appointment of someone to make a decision on behalf of a person with a learning disability and how they can be used.
