“Straightforward Legal Support for Extraordinary Families”

Sutton Parents Forum

Sutton Parents Forum
18th October 2017
Mental Capacity Seminar

Sutton Parents Forum was set up for parents of disabled children who live in the London Borough of Sutton.  They provide an open and welcoming place for parents to increase their knowledge and access to services.

Their aim is to deliver a shared voice to inform the services available for the needs of all disabled children, young people and their families in Sutton and they specifically provide provision for children who are under 26.

Philip Warford from Renaissance Legal has been invited to present a seminar to the families of Sutton, to talk about Mental Capacity to help families plan for the future.

Philip will talk to parents and carers about what the future might hold when their child turns 18: the key principles are that no one has the right to make decisions on behalf of a person when they become an adult. The reality of this is not so clear cut.

If a person does not have the ability to make a decision then their mental capacity is questioned, Philip talks about the ideas around mental capacity and what families and carers need to consider and action they can take.

Philip will then explain Powers of Attorney, the selection of someone who can make decisions on behalf of a person with a learning disability and also covers what the Court of Protection is, what they do, timescales and charges.

Philip will guide families on the options available and importance of not putting off these decisions.
