Decision Making Seminar – Worthing
West Sussex Parent Carer Forum (WSPCF) Decision Making Seminar
12 June 2018
Worthing Leisure Centre, West Sussex
WSPCF help parent carers of children and young people aged 0-25 with additional needs and disabilities to improve and make positive changes to the lives of their families and others. We do this by providing information, support and training to enable them to take part in helping to shape local services and make a difference in West Sussex.
Philip Warford has been invited to present a seminar about Decision Making and Mental Capacity, to help families plan for the future.
Philip will talk to parents and carers about what will happen when their child turns 18. The key principles are that no one has the right to make decisions on behalf of a person when they become an adult. The reality of this is not so clear cut.
If a person does not have the ability to make a decision then their mental capacity is questioned, Philip talks about the ideas around mental capacity and what families and carers need to consider and action they can take.
Philip will then explain Powers of Attorney, the selection of someone who can make decisions on behalf of a person with a learning disability and also covers what the Court of Protection is, what they do, timescales and charges.
Philip will guide families on the options available and importance of not putting off these decisions.
